About Our Church

Patrick and Lisa Kelley founded River Pointe Church in December of 1996 with four other families. Much to Patrick’s surprise, the church grew quickly since that first living room service. Over the course of the first eight years, River Pointe was one of the largest portable churches in the country, moving five 48-foot trailers of equipment in and out each Sunday to have church. In 2005, River Pointe moved into its permanent 96-acre site, perfectly situated near the intersection of two major freeways in one of the most diverse and fastest growing counties in the U.S.

In 2012, River Pointe went portable once again starting its first satellite campus in the neighboring suburb of Missouri City, Texas as a number of families thought the original campus was too far away to invite their friends. Averaging about 600 in weekly attendance at this location, River Pointe purchased 18 acres of land strategically situated between 2 of the largest developments in southwest Houston. River Pointe plans to break ground for a future permanent home on this land in 2018.

River Pointe has always purposed to reach out to Southwest Houston in a relational way. Patrick came to believe that Christ was real because of a friend that loved him without condition and was more interested in being his friend than reforming his behavior. As a result, River Pointe has a culture that is safe, open, authentic, engaging, and welcoming--- with a commitment reaching out and relating to others well before they ever believe in Christ.

Job Description

Overview – The Lead Pastor at Missouri City is responsible for the overall ministry, spiritual growth, and effectiveness of the Missouri City campus.  The position directs staff and lay leaders to live out the core values of the church in the redemptive work to which God has called River Pointe in the Great Commandment and Great Commission.  The Lead Pastor is the person whom people see as the leader and in charge of the Missouri City mission.  This position requires proactive forward thinking to shape and lead the mission to reach the surrounding community.  The Lead Pastor reports directly to the Senior/Founding Pastor.

Outward Focus: The primary target of the mission are those outside the faith, and the Lead Pastor sets the tone for effective evangelism. This is accomplished, in part, by building a receptive culture and leading the people of Missouri City to care about their friends who do not have a relationship with Jesus Christ. The Lead Pastor is the “keeper of the culture” making sure the outsider is expected, welcomed, and connects with the ministry

Everybody Works:  The Lead Pastor ensures that our people are plugged into the mission of the church.  This requires direct recruitment as well as leading leaders to recruit, train and deploy others to serve in the many different ministries.  Serving and giving your life away is considered an important part of spiritual formation, and is strategic in our discipleship efforts.

Community Counts:  The main discipleship strategy of Missouri City is small groups.  The Lead Pastor continually recruits, trains, and encourages small group leaders. The small group is the best place for the congregation to receive and provide pastoral care to one another.  As the campus grows in attendance, growing the number of small groups is vital to long-term success.  A sense of community is needed at Missouri City through a variety of church-wide events.

Additionally, there is a need to engage the community surrounding Missouri City through mission efforts to the less fortunate and impoverished.  The Lead Pastor determines how the people of Missouri City help people who need help and develops relationships with agencies that serve our city.

Relevant Truth:  The Lead Pastor works with Missouri City staff and leaders to make truth taught in Scripture applicable and relevant to people’s daily life.  This involves supervising children’s staff and youth leaders to make sure programs for different age groups are relevant and connecting with their intended audiences.  The Lead Pastor occasionally preaches at the campus as well as serves communion, conducts parent/child dedications and baptizes new converts.

Other: The Lead Pastor manages the Missouri City operational budget and understands how to run the day-to-day operation of the mission.  The operational load for the Missouri City mission includes security, marketing, development, and facilities.  The River Pointe business office and facilities department provides support for many needed functions, but this position coordinates with the other ministry departments of the church.  The Lead Pastor is responsible for leading staff well and handling all personnel issues on the campus.  The Lead Pastor makes sure Missouri City doesn’t operate independently of River Pointe, but in harmony, as 1 church in 3 locations.

Qualifications

  • Undergraduate degree required. Masters preferred. Biblical training preferred.
  • 5 or more years’ experience in ministry with a track record of growth.
  • Self-motivated, self-sustained, with an ability to work
  • Inherent desire and demonstrated ability to grow a ministry or organization.
  • Proven ability to develop, coach and lead staff and volunteers in a growing environment.
  • Proven ability to act quickly, adapt, solve problems, and effect change in a fast-paced culture.
  • Demonstrated ability to create environments and events that outsiders love to attend.

The church grew quickly from living room services, to one of the largest portable churches in the country, to a permanent 96-acre site in Richmond, Texas, perfectly situated near the intersection of two major freeways in one of the most diverse and fastest growing counties in the U.S.  The church’s continued growth now reaches more than 6,000 in weekly attendance on 3 campuses (Richmond, Missouri City, and West End inside Houston proper, which brought with it our full name River Pointe and West End Church) as well as a prison campus in Rosharon, TX. The community and congregation are racially diverse, and typical of most suburban areas, and has a heavy emphasis on children and youth ministry.
